- Abstract
- This dissertation is an attempt to find a meaningful and theologically sound approach to spiritual direction for women of the Disciples of Christ denomination. The study involves in-depth research into the approaches of the two major figures in the history of spiritual direction: Benedict and Ignatius Loyola, representing the ancient and classical eras of religious thought, respectively. There follows a study of four modern women writers in the field of spiritual direction: Evelyn Underhill, Dorothee Soelle, Sandra Schneiders, and Carolyn Gratton. The insights of all of these writers are evaluated, sifted and combined to form the basis of a workshop on spiritual direction presented twice to groups of apporximately 100 women from the denomination in a weekend retreat setting. The project is evaluated and adjusted for later use.
