Abstract
  • The purpose of this study was to learn why persons said they left mainline denominations and what caused them to join fundamentalist churches. Men and women of various ages, occupations, and educational levels were interviewed. They said they wanted to hear the Bible preached and taught as the infallible word of God. They claimed to now have a heart relationship with the Lord they didn't have before. They found a caring attitude, a warm and loving support community of faith they had not experienced. They objected to the social-activist position of mainline churches. They preferred a freer, less formal, more evangelical style of worship, including altar calls, gospel songs, and free prayers.
