Abstract
  • This project proposes that pastoral visitation in the home for the purpose of ministering spiritually is desirable and beneficial. The biblical model of shepherd is examined. Drawing on Richard Baxter's The Reformed pastor and more recent sources, historical foundations for pastoral care are reviewed. Current issues and changing cultural climates that influence and hinder pastoral visitation are considered. A plan for visitation is developed in conversation with groups within the local congregation. Responses from the congregants indicate that there are benefits for the pastor and the congregation when the pastor visits systematically with a ministry of Bible reading and prayer.
