  • This study determines the place of deacon ministry biblically, historically, and currently in the United Presbyterian Church USA with the hope of improving deacon ministry and picking up clues as to its future. Deacons were church officers from the beginning of the organized church and there are over 61,000 in the United Presbyterian Church USA today. Deacons and pastor-advisors in 119 Presbyterian churches were surveyed to discover organization and models of deacon ministry. Responses to the questionnaire indicated that there is a hunger to know more about deacons and an eagerness to improve deacon ministry.
