Abstract
  • This project investigates and evaluates the power of imaginal preaching--both content and delivery--to confront individual fear of dying, corporate fear of institutional dying, a pastor's fear of a dying ministry, and a pastor's fear of performative dying in the moment of delivery. The project examines the capacity of imaginal preaching to meet at a visceral level the primal fears of a small congregation advanced in years, part of a denomination in membership decline for three decades. Imaginal preaching can free preachers and listeners to appropriate the death-transcending reality of Christ, while offering a preacher a paradigm for a preaching ministry of presence.
