- Abstract
- The manner in which the spiritual, emotional, and psychological effects of grief are addressed in today's church is an aspect of pastoral ministry which is pushed often to the background. Ministers as well as laity may well wait for an individual to approach them with a grief-related situation before they give thought to what will be said or done in order to help the bereaved. In that 'on the spot' form of ministry, the minister does not present his/her best pastoral side and the care-receiver may walk away feeling as though their needs have not been addressed adequately. This dissertation is designed as a practical resource to assist both clergy and laity in the development of an intentional grief ministry within their respective congregational settings. It takes two forms: that of evaluation of the particular church's current ministry to those experiencing grief as well as instruction in the establishment of an intentional grief ministry. Emphasis is placed on the care provider's ability to develop a meaningful relationship with the care receiver.
