Abstract
  • Duality in counseling relationships is a concern today in the counseling community. Those who counsel in institutional settings in particular are struggling with the need and/or the opportunity to counsel those with whom they have some other role. This is especially true for the individual who offers counseling within the bounds of the local church community. A minister in the local church setting has many roles in the life of a congregation. With these diverse roles in place, church members and others in the community turn to the minister for counseling. The project is intended to shed light on duality and offer guidelines for the pastoral counselor who does counseling in the immediate context of the local church. The issue of duality is studied from the perspectives of object relations theory and pastoral theology. The project examines counseling and other pastoral relationships from the object relations perspective, highlights the importance of duality in pastoral ministry, and offers specific guidelines for persons who are counseling within the local church.
