Abstract
  • This project proposes that transformation is the goal of pastoral ministry. The project explores texts on preaching to determine the degree to which they see transformation as the purpose of preaching. Walter Brueggemann and Walter Wink offer insight into what transformation means and how it comes about. Transformative preaching seeks to help the listener move from the destroying way of dominant cultural values to the giving way of covenant rooted in neighbor love. The preacher evokes transformation with Scriptural images that offer alternative visions of how life can be lived faithfully and meaningfully. The project develops a model for preaching that will aid in the transformative work of pastoral ministry, and demonstrates this model in three sermons. The sermons are evaluated by a group that assesses their faithfulness to the model.
