  • The focus of this project is on the division in the United Methodist Church that has lead to an impending schism involving clergy who preside over 'holy unions.' Using analogies drawn from the Genesis narrative about Jacob's life, the theoretical approach for this study evolved from cultural anthropology, filtered through family systems and object-relations principles. The purpose is to reveal underlying structural changes that are fueling the UM debate. The scope is confined to interview material gathered from six United Methodist clergypersons. As in the title, the more specific thrust is to correlate changes in the perceived balance between respected ecclesiastical authority and the power of God needed to sustain denominational health.
