Abstract
  • The author discovered by means of interviews in a rural Presbyterian parish in Pennsylvania that an apparent confusion concerning the Christian hope actually reflects private loyalty to the Reformed tradition and a vital belief in the presence of Christ among his people, and a defensive response to a community where the anxious anticipation of a remote Christ is militantly advocated. After a study of Second Peter, he seeks to alleviate the sense of isolation from like-minded Christians and emphasizes the communion of saints as integral to the concept of eternal life.
