Abstract
  • The project demonstrates the existence of healthy, growing congregations which exhibit in their membership considerable diversity of age, racial-ethnic background, education, socio-economic status and theology. An attempt is made to isolate some factors which make growth possible in such congregations whose constituencies are not homogeneous. Interviews were conducted in ten congregations meeting the author's criteria for diversity and for growth/health. From the study five factors are identified as contributing to growth in the face of diversity: 'leadership', 'location', 'intentionality', 'a climate of openness to diversity', and 'a common vision'.
