 - Abstract
 - This thesis addresses the issue of training church members to effectively and confidently perform the ministries of the church both in the world and within the local church; specifically, to provide pastoral care ministries in the context of a congregation. It is supported by a theology of ministry (biblical witness and historical overview) and an exploration of the nature of such programs. A model of training supervision is suggested. The collective feedback data of the trainers, a clergy peer observer, and the author based on his observation of video tapes of the sessions were used to evaluate the program's validity in increasing church members' self-confidence, pastoral identity, and competence as providers of pastoral care. The result was a significant increase in all of these areas.
