Abstract
  • The author argues that there are two necessary dynamics of Free Church ecclesiology: voluntarism and covenantalism. He notes a contemporary waning of covenantalism and a skewing of voluntarism into expressive individualism. In response to this individualism, two practices for a reclamation of covenantalism among Southern Baptists is presented: congregational covenant-making and covenantal consultation. A model of consultation is developed which is congruent with the covenant heritage. In summary, reclamation of covenantalism requires: construction of polities of free discourse and new images of ministry.
