Abstract
  • The lives and theology of the Apostolic Fathers have relevance for preaching the Word because they struggled with the same issues we do in the contemporary church, namely: how to state the Christian faith in a way that makes sense to a secular world, how to provide for order in the life of the faith community and how to live the kind of life that expresses faithfulness to the Good News in Jesus Christ. The methodology used was to review the Fathers' work and preach nine sermons during Advent and Lent using the common lectionary and the work of individual Fathers as it related to a given text and sermon. This thesis may well assist the church in being clear about its purpose and its evangelism as it continues to reform.
