- Abstract
- The dissertation/project aims at exploring the issue of secularization with particular regard to its effect upon the mission and ministry of Baptist churches in the urban environment of the Australian industrial city, Newcastle. The dissertation section of the study examines the Lukan perspective of Jesus' mission and ministry, the development of the Baptist movement with particular regard to the contribution by Spurgeon, Carey and Graham and the process of secularization with particular regard to the myth of the Australian secular society. The project section examines in detail the growth and decline of twenty Baptist churches in the urban environment of Australia's largest industrial city. The study revealed that personal religious belief in Australia remains strong but attachment to institutional religious bodies is in decline. Examination of the twenty Newcastle Baptist churches revealed that the majority of growth was borrowed from other churches with little evidence of growth as a result of mission activity. The study contains suggestions for churches experiencing both growth and decline.
