Abstract
  • Although the context for this project was a Lutheran congregation, it has broad application across denominational lines. The thesis is that there is a body of contemporary American poetry which expresses themes that are in harmony with Lutheran theology. The project includes an anthology of more than one hundred poems by nearly fifty twentieth-century writers organized under a variety of themes consistent with Lutheran theology. Through actual use in various settings within the congregation, the author demonstrated that this body of poetry is readily available as a valuable resource for the mutual ministry shared by clergy and laity.
