Abstract
  • The motivation for this dissertation on the preaching of Southern Baptist renegade, Carlyle Marney (1916-1978), was Marney's unfulfilled invitation to deliver the Lyman Beecher lectures on preaching at Yale in 1980. This project ponders what Marney might well have said. Beginning with a theological foundation for preaching that utilizes a variety of sources, Marney's understanding of preaching as the authentic word of God is built in three stages. They include the task of preaching itself, the personhood of the preacher, and the role of preaching in relation to the mission and ministry of the church.
