  • The explicit purpose of this project was to lead a group of leaders from First United Methodist Church of Atmore, Alabama through the process of writing a biblical mission statement. In the process the additional purpose of realizing growth through fostering congregational unity was set. Chapter 1 introduces the project's original aim, goal and plan. Chapter 2 describes the first retreat. Chapter 3 describes the teaching sessions the author conducted with various groups. Chapter 4 describes mission statements used as guides for our writing. Chapter 5 describes the preaching of the sermon series. Chapter 6 describes the final retreat. Chapter 7 provides conclusions, final evaluations and future hopes. The result of this project was a congregationally written, biblical mission statement which was approved and adopted by the Administrative Board of FUMC.
