Abstract
  • It is the contention of the author that the church is neglecting a vital ministry to those who have been affected by addiction; as a result, these individuals are looking outside the church for the support and encouragement which the church should be providing. This thesis proposes a vital part of the answer to this problem by presenting a biblical model of addiction and ministry to the addicted. The author points out the flaws in 12-step groups and provides an alternative which is biblical in its approach. This alternative is called Higher Ground, a local church-sponsored, Christ-centered support group for the addicted and the family. The author presents a history of this ministry, shows how it implements biblical principles and evaluates the effectiveness of this ministry with statistics and case studies. The author gathered his information by acting as facilitator of a Higher Ground group in his own church as part of his ministry.
