Abstract
  • The thesis of this dissertation project is that apathy and disinterest are signs of a spiritual problem, but that they can be diminished when congregations arrive at a common purpose for spiritual formation and implement specific opportunities to achieve spiritual growth. One of the better opportunities for achieving spiritual growth is participation is the Cursillo (Via de Cristo) movement. The method of study included reading and analysis of congregational statistical data, personal interviews with Cursillo participants from the congregation both before and after attending a retreat, surveys of Cursillo participants and comparisons with similar congregations. Results of the study indicated that those who attend Cursillo (or similar programs) are uplifted and renewed and are better able to avoid burnout in the congregation. They find support in small groups with other Cursillo participants, are eager to minister, and invite other people to attend.
