- The 'Reducing missionary attrition project' (ReMAP 1) released in 1995 conducted a study of 528 mission groups to determine the principal causes for attrition among missionaries. The top 3 'preventable' causes identified were: interpersonal problems with peers (other missionaries/colleagues); inner personal problems; and immature spiritual life. The focus of this thesis project is to show how the Great Commandment directly addresses the issues raised by the ReMAP 1 survey. The project delineates how the Great Commandment passages provide a spirituality that guides a missionary in their spiritual formation process. The Great Commandment provides 'cardinal points' like those of a compass that serves to orient a missionary in the midst of the challenges he or she faces. The thesis project then delineates specific spiritual formation practices that enable a missionary to 'take their bearings' in the midst of their journey.
