- Abstract
- This study is part of a larger project designed to find effective ways to teach homiletics. It begins by identifying the problem of preachers being ill-equipped and under-prepared for the task of preaching by their formal theological education. More specifically, classical theological education addresses preaching to specific target audiences on only a limited basis. The perspective of this project is that specifically focused preaching enhances the effectiveness of communication. In addition, little has been written and taught regarding preaching to older adults, as opposed to younger generations. Preaching must address the reality that the population of the United States is growing older. This thesis addresses ways to communicate biblical truths to aging adults more effectively. It surveys contemporary literature which addresses issues relevant to the elderly. The project also includes a self-study for preachers who preach regularly, exploring specific themes for preaching, unique characteristics of older adults, ways in which the Bible addresses particular issues faced by older adults, and ways in which preachers can use more inclusive language in the wording of the sermon. Finally, this thesis contains a lesson plan for teaching one particular aspect of homiletics.
