Abstract
  • American Christians who have had a significant immersion experience in a Third World church do not necessarily return to the US church committed to a more justice-oriented understanding of the gospel. Although shocked by the inhuman living conditions in El Salvador, three delegations from Holy Trinity Parish returned with more compassion and interest in service projects for the marginalized in the Salvadoran sister parish, but with a mixed interest in addressing the structural causes of poverty. Reluctance, anxiety, questioning, and doubt surfaced in the group interviews and parish day of reflection for implementing a justice-oriented understanding of the gospel at the larger parish level.
