Abstract
  • This study will attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of using case studies in teaching Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod laity the biblical and historical basis of the doctrine of closed Communion. It is hoped that this will lead to an increase in confidence in discussing the matter with those who come from denominational backgrounds which find this confessional Lutheran practice unpalatable. To this end, a study and accompanying materials will be prepared from a biblical and historical analysis of the doctrine to strengthen the resolve and comfort of those who attend the study in discussing and, if necessary, winsomely defending this teaching to their friends and family who disagree with it. Success in this matter will be measured by a combination of surveys and personal interviews with congregation members and study participants, particularly to see if the use of case studies was effective in the teaching of this doctrine.
