Abstract
  • Currently, John Wesley's class leader system is being underutilized at Old Ship African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The primary focus of the class leaders is collecting money and attending to the physical well-being of their members in a limited capacity. According to the general rules written by Wesley, attention should also be given to the 'means of grace,' or the practice of spiritual disciplines. Doing so would significantly shape the lives of the members in their spiritual formation. The researcher used pre and post surveys, lectures and small group process to gether, disseminate and integrate information respectively. Readings in the areas of Wesley's class leader system and the spiritual disciplines were used to gain knowledge. The research project concluded that when persons were given tools and were intentional about learning and practicing the 'means of grace,' their spiritual journey was enhanced. It was also noted that when learning was done in small group format in also enhanced their experience and strengthened their relationship with one another.
