- Abstract
- This study concerns itself with the spiritual intimacy of the pastor. There is a problem in the personal lives of contemporary ministers, which surfaces in the forms of addiction, burnout, infidelity, and such. At the root of the problem is a need for spiritual intimacy. This need merits an investigation and reflection on spiritual intimacy: definition of, challenges to, and a model for. The thesis of this study is that the beloved disciple is an appropriate model for the spiritual intimacy of pastors. The project tested the validity and application of the thesis through selected interviews of pastors. The method of research consisted of investigating the epithet the beloved disciple and the pericopes outlining his mentions in the text. In addition, other literary sources were consulted to determine the dynamics of Christian spirituality and the psychology of intimacy. The project engaged fifteen pastors--seven active and eight inactive--in a spiritual intimacy interview. The project probed the realities of the spiritually intimate life, through a juxtaposition of these ministers and the beloved disciple's spiritual intimacy model.
