Abstract
  • Non-ordained people pastoring Catholic parishes which no longer have resident priests develop both the theology and the practice of ecclesiology and sacraments. On-site observations and in-depth interviews of thirteen non-ordained pastors and some of their significant parishioners in five Midwestern dioceses who pioneered these appointments form the basis of this study. Among the conclusions: most parishes, after an initial period of stressful change, adopted well to this new form of pastoring. Theological reflection on the experience advances ecclesiological understandings of church and leads to fuller understandings of sacraments, particularly Eucharist and priesthood.
