- Abstract
- Believing that lay members in the church can be trained to provide pastoral care to other members, thereby strengthening fellowship, limiting chronic absenteeism, and church abandonment, the author trained care team volunteers in basic ministry skills. Volunteers received twelve hours of training and participated in three months of supervised ministry. Those workers developed care strategies to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of assigned clients. The research supports the concept that lay persons make good care givers, and that the enlargement of volunteers' understanding and skills in human relations provides strategies which enhance the church's ability to minister to its members.
