Abstract
  • A history of the uses of Luke 4:18 in missions demonstrates the need to remain faithful to a classical view of the mission of the church. Twentieth century interpretations by Liberation Theology and Social Gospel redefined the mission of the church. A sound biblical exposition of Luke 4:18 by the researcher reveals the poor primarily as the spiritual poor, but does not exclude economic conditions. A study of the current debate on the mission of the church with regard to Luke 4:18 reveals a need to remain faithful to a classical view of the mission of the church focusing on preaching the gospel for the purpose of the remission of sins in the twenty-first century.
