Abstract
  • This project examines and evaluates the ways that storytelling--oral, historical, and pictorial--can help a congregation and pastor work through change in a period of transition, described with the metaphor of being plunged into an abyss. Storytelling explores the theological and psychological ramifications of uncertainty. The project uses a time line to reveal the unique history of a recently united, small, rural church, along with a sermon series highlighting the value of storytelling, and new worship rituals that include prayer, dialogues, and Bible reading. As members of the congregation rediscover their individual and collective stories they also rediscover and reaffirm hope that energizes, empowers, and sustains their faith.
