Abstract
  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate the degree to which ecumenism has impacted local congregations. A survey tool was used to measure the attitudes of persons in five different congregations in western Perry County, Pennsylvania. The congregations which were studied were United Church of Christ (2), United Methodist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran. The study also evaluated the data by age and gender indicators. The overall study indicated a significant ecumenical openness in worship, fellowship, witness, and mission. Areas showing limitations in openness included the use of the ecumenical creeds, relations with the Roman Catholic Church, evangelism, social justice issues, devotional practices, feelings of loneliness (61 and older) and not feeling needed (confirmation age to 25).
