Abstrakt

The project presents a theological evaluation of the role of the Methodist Church in Irish history and politics, 1886-1985. In the early years Methodist over-identification with emerging Ulster Unionism is observed, as is Methodist silence during the first forty-five years of the Northern Ireland state. The more prophetic voice is noted from 1969-1985. The project was taught as a class in faith and politics and has highlighted the need for systematic programme of Christian education if Irish Methodism is to develop its political stewardship and empower members for public ministry.
