Abstract
  • Christian baptism has always been an important topic of discussion within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). While much discussion has taken place, insufficient theological reflection has occurred. In this project, the author encourages renewed reflection upon such issues as the mode and meaning of baptism, open or inclusive membership, re-baptism and baptismal unity. He pays particular attention to the World Council of Churches document, Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry. The project provides biblical and historical research on Christian baptism, as well as current ecumenical dialogue. Contemporary baptismal theology and practice among Disciples are revealed by means of a survey consisting of both laity and clergy responses. The author's research is culminated in a study document to be used by his denomination providing fresh reflection on baptism.
