  • The small rural churches of Oklahoma suffer from a shortage of qualified preachers. A high rate of pastoral turnover and geographic isolation necessitate the training of lay preachers to meet this need. Lay preachers can be effective if they understand the communication patterns of the traditional/oral listeners who occupy these pews. This project equipped a group of laymen from a large urban church to preach in the small rural churches of Oklahoma. The laymen were trained to understand and appreciate biblical narrative. they learned basic storytelling skills. They worked to construct and deliver sermons that respected the traditional/oral communication keys of stories, relationships, and proverbial sayings. The learners developed through classroom instruction and the practical experience of preaching in small rural congregations. the project produced five lay preachers ready to supply a pressing need.
