Abstract
  • This project researches Practical Guidelines on Policy and Procedure for Roman Catholic Diocesan Officials responding to clergy alcoholism. The project builds on a qualitative analysis of theological and clinical research on priestly identity, and the etiology and treatment of the disease of alcoholism. Through the development and use of a clinical questionnaire seventeen clinicians from a major treatment center give recommendations for treatment and the implications for the wider diocesan community. Involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous is stressed as part of this holistic response. The contents of a Diocesan policy statement are outlined, as are procedures for their implementation.
