Abstract
  • The author added spiritual guidance, centering prayer and contemplative meditation, to a 10-week group-counseling program designed to reduce depression. Treatment included cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and magazine photo collage. Beck Depression Inventory and David Burns' pre- and post-session evaluations were employed. Results were inconclusive based on small group (five women started, four finished, three completed results) and preliminary nature of the study, but suggest addition of spiritual guidance may help reduce depression as it increases relationship with God. Other factors contributed highly to results. How both may combine with group treatment to reduce depression merits further study.
