Abstract
  • This dissertation-project focuses on the thought of Robert Richardson (1806-1876) in regard to the role and function of the Holy Spirit in conversion and sanctification. Richardson made his main contribution to the Stone-Campbell movement as co-editor of Alexander Campbell's second periodical, 'The Millennial Harbinger'. This study has sought to reclaim the lost heritage of Richardson's thought on the Holy Spirit, to find an understanding of his thought and the influences of his time, to show how his thought differed from the thought of other leaders in the Stone-Campbell Movement previous to 1906, and to attempt to update his thought with that of some recent studies on the Holy Spirit. The second part of this study consists of an editing of Richardson's twenty-four communion devotionals, Communings in the Sanctuary. The use of these edited devotionals may be expected to recenter the focus of the thoughts of worshippers on the Lord's Supper from an ordinance and memorial emphasis to one of sacrament and Christian nurture.
