This dissertation explores the formation of the liturgy in the Lutheran Book of Worship, and the theological and liturgical shifts it embodies when compared with the liturgy in the Service Book and Hymnal. It examines how these shifts were interpreted to adult Lutherans through worship education materials prepared by the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America between 1960 and 1987. The project is an adult instruction course, based on the liturgy and using an action-reflection method of instruction. It is designed for use with adults from nonliturgical or nonchurch backgrounds seeking membership in Lutheran churches.
