Abstract
  • This project proposes that official Roman Catholic documents concerning the homily can yield a perspective on liturgical preaching that can ground the assessment of such preaching. The project summarizes and analyzes official documents issued in 1963-1994, and then presents principles, patterns, and behaviors of human communication. From this research the project derives a taxonomy of preaching abilities undergirded by Alverno College's approach to assessment, including a sophisticated listener-response instrument. The project then suggests ways that the process and instrument can be used to encourage and monitor a preacher's progress.
