- The disease concept of alcoholism has gained widespread acceptance. The most success in treating this disease has come through a renewal of one's spirituality. Personal spirituality focuses on one's higher power, the self, relationships, surrender, conversion, trust, and a host of other issues, which are all core parts of the AA program. This paper has used the alcoholic and the recovery process of AA's twelve steps as a paradigm for growth in spirituality for everyone facing a variety of dis-eases that disrupt modern life. This process has been correlated with biblical insights and concepts as the foundation of Christian spirituality. Research was accomplished through conversations, counseling experiences, and personal study with the people and the program of AA as seen from a Christian perspective.
