Abstract
  • This thesis is based on the imminent wave of baby boomers entering retirment, their readiness, the church's readiness to respond, and what the baby boomer woman and the church can do to prepare for this seismic shift in society. Seventy-six million baby boomers will begin the retirement process in 2006, and, judging from the writer's research, most boomers are not ready to move into retirement, nor will they retire in the same way the previous generation did. Many boomers desire to transition into retirement -- cut back to part-time, move in and out of a variety of jobs, or even start a new business that will fulfill a dream. They are looking for significance, have a desire to 'give back,' and have serious financial concerns. Because it is heavily populated with boomers, the church is certainly going to experience a change because of this prodigious movement of retiring boomers. With adequate preparation and vision, the church is also in the position to reap Kingdom rewards by engaging the boomer in Kingdom work. This project was designed to understand the boomer woman, her needs and desires as she moves toward retirement, and also to discover ways the church can respond to the boomer and her desire to give back. The end result is a proposal and a plan for both the institution and the individual to equally benefit from this new and eager workforce.
