Abstract
  • This project was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a spiritual development program on parishioners anxiety. A program was developed using group process principles with disciplines of spiritual formation as a model for an intentional function of the pastoral care ministry in the church and in equipping persons for the caring ministry. This project involved adult African American volunteers from a United Church of Christ parish in Washington, DC who consented to participate by being a part of either an experimental (treatment) group or the control group. Both groups were administered the Inventory of Measurement of Stressors measuring the extent of stress from anxiety, depression, and religion. The instrument proved to have significant pastoral use.
