Abstract
  • Our Christian heritage can inform the process of psychotherapy in a unique way. The author analyzed a sermon by Meister Eckhart by focusing on four key concepts: word, image, detachment and union. The author draws parallels to these concepts in the teachings of Jesus and illustrates applications in the practice of psychotherapy. The concept of detachment is of special interest: Eckhart understood detachment as essential to union with God; the author maintains that it is also essential to the process of psychotherapy. The author concludes with recommending further application of Christian thought to psychotherapy.
