- Nursing students regularly work with patients who are experiencing suffering. Because the emphasis of their education and practice is on the needs of their patients and families, these students often have little time to reflect on the profound theological questions that suffering evokes. This project addresses the concern that in the process of dealing with profound suffering in their patients, nursing students do not receive adequate support for their own spiritual formation. Using phenomenological methodology, eleven senior baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed about their experiences with patients who were suffering. The results of the interviews were analyzed, and four themes emerged: the importance of preparation, the need to acknowledge the reality of the situation, the significance of obtaining support, and the necessity of self care. Using the four themes that were identified, the PASS model was developed to assist nursing students as they deal with suffering in their patients.
