Abstract
  • This integrative project sets forth the indicative style of preaching from theory to practice. Indicative preaching encourages a forthright, declarative sermon presentation that allows for clarity and theological reflection all at the same time. In this theory the function of the herald (kerygma) is to proclaim more than to exhort. Proclamation allows room for the individual listener to reflect, integrate, and respond to the Good News. Indicative preaching thus seeks to draw people into an intimate encounter with the Almighty, without rousing internal defense mechanisms that block communication. In this approach to homiletics it becomes an exegetical expectation for the preacher to maintain the integrity of the biblical literature, including its mode. This means adapting sermon preparation to reflect the true nature of the text. The project also presents guidelines for indicative preaching for the parish pastor and a series of six sermons. The guidelines are meant to be practical hints to facilitate the incorporation of indicative preaching into the local parish ministry.
