- Abstract
- This thesis project suggests that until we understand the mind and desires of the postmodern listener, and also fully embrace the richness of scripture and the polyvalent nature of our canon, pastors will continue to struggle to engage un-churched and de-churched people and the postmodern listener. The project examines the development of the unique postmodern perspective on spirituality and how the preacher can speak to postmodern hearts and minds using the textual approaches of Midrash, Lectio Divina, and deconstruction. It culminates in the delivery of a workshop and accompanying workbook for preachers who are interested in using the Revised Common Lectionary to preach to postmoderns, particularly in the setting of the non-traditional church. The general purpose of the project is to demonstrate how the preacher can utilize Midrash, Lectio Divina, and deconstruction to present the scriptural text in a way that is both authentic and ecumenical, especially in the setting of the emerging church.
