- Abstract
- The purpose of this project is to analyze the office of the District Superintendent in the United Methodist Church for its effectiveness in providing spiritual leadership. The purpose of the study is fourfold: (a) to study biblical, theological, and historical roots of the episcopacy; (b) to evaluate the offices of 'Presiding Elder', 'District Superintendent', and 'Auxiliary Bishop' as models for spiritual leadership; (c) to test the concept of a superintendent providing spiritual leadership during a seven week pastors' spiritual formation group; (d) to recommend specific changes and emphases that will help the district superintendent be a spiritual leader.
