- This study was an exercise in contextual theology, located in the Critical Care Unit of a large teaching hospital, Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto from 1996 to 1998. The focus was to create community through a process of dialogue in an effort to define the meaning of patient focused care. As the organization was undergoing considerable crisis (provoked in part by fiscal restraints at the time), a special emphasis was placed on organizational grief. The two domains engaged in the study were from organizational development, specifically the work of Peter Senge as it applies to organizational learning and pastoral ministry in the context of a Critical Care Unit in crisis. The findings validate the learning organization as a concept in support of change and empowerment. In addition, a theological/pastoral perspective, while recognizing the value of the organic, relational nature of organizational design, pointed to the need for the development of personal awareness, as an issue of capacity for relationship in organizational learning. As well, organizational grief was identified as a catalyst for dialogue as it enabled transformation in the organization, the creation of community and further, enabled a new definition of patient focused care.
