Abstract
  • The study explores the interaction between alcoholism and the grief process for the alcoholic in recovery. Twenty-three alcoholics and non-alcoholics were interviewed and the content of their responses was analyzed. Alcoholics had a higher number of alcohol-related losses and exhibited chronic and delayed grief reactions. Alcohol suspended the grieving process. Sobriety allowed the grief process to be completed. Alcoholics identified sobriety, telling their stories, expressing feelings, and spirituality as the keys to their healing process.
