Abstract
  • The project provides historical background to assert that Protestantism has lost its visual heritage while embracing the spoken and written word, and advocates a renewal of the visual arts within congregational life. After constructing an historical survey of Christian attitudes toward visual art, it lays a theological foundation for the use of art in religious expression. This project includes: 1) five cases studies of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations where art is being used; 2) a process by which congregations may increase the quality of visual art they use; and 3) a report on the use of this process within a congregational setting.
